CE Courses in Ecopsychology
Dr. Michael J. Cohen, Ed.D.*Micheal J. Cohen

Citizens of our contemporary society typically spend less than five percent of their lifetime outdoors. For a citizen of a first-world country to live in the wilderness for a long period of time is a rarity. Ecopsychologist Dr. Michael J. Cohen is such a person. For nearly 40 years he has lived almost continuously in the wilds of nature and to this day sleeps outdoor daily.

Dr. Cohen has lived in and led groups into settings similar to the "Survivor" TV series, except his goal was not to compete for a million dollars. His goal was to discover how we can live in sustainable balance with our natural environment. Since 1959, he has camped and studied in eighty-four different ecosystems for periods of three days to six months and lived among many human communities including the Amish, indigenous people, outdoorsmen and ecologists.

During his long stay in nature, Dr. Cohen became so consciously connected and responsive to nature's ways that he became attuned to the intelligence of natural systems at work around him and discovered what he calls the Natural Systems Thinking Process (NSTP). To those who spend little time in nature, Dr. Cohen Mike may seem like maverick at first, but he is considered a genius once they, too ,connect with nature and sense the deep truth of his teachings.

Cohen shares his 'maverick genius' through the Institute of Global Education where he  oversees coursework and undergraduate and graduate degree programs based on NSTP. He has authored many books including Reconnecting with Nature and The Web of Life Imperative and his courses have helped hundreds of individuals rediscover the natural thinking process that is biologically wired into our makeup so we can make conscious choices to live in a state of well-being.

Cohen has served on the Adjunct Faculty of Portland State University Graduate School of Extended Studies, the Founder and Chair of Integrated Ecology, World Peace University/Institute of Global Education Portland, Oregon and is a Contributing Editor for Between the Species Journal of the Albert Schweitzer Center, Berkeley, CA.
